One of the most common questions writers ask is: how long should this be? The answer depends on the format, the audience, and your goal. Here's what the research says — and practical guidelines for every content type.
Blog posts and articles
The research on ideal blog post length is fairly consistent:
- 300–600 words — Suitable for news updates, quick tips, and social sharing. Thin for SEO.
- 1,000–1,500 words — The sweet spot for most general blog posts. Enough depth to be useful, short enough to be read.
- 1,500–2,500 words — Strong for SEO. Long-form posts in this range consistently rank well in Google for competitive keywords.
- 2,500–4,000 words — Deep guides, tutorials, and comprehensive resources. High potential for backlinks and evergreen traffic.
- 4,000+ words — Pillar content, research reports. Highest SEO ceiling but requires significant depth to justify the length.
According to HubSpot and Backlinko research, articles of 2,100–2,400 words tend to perform best on Google. But length should follow content requirements — padding to hit a word count actually hurts rankings.
- Cold outreach: 50–125 words. Every extra word reduces response rate.
- Newsletter: 200–500 words for a single-story email. 500–800 for a curated roundup.
- Professional communication: Under 200 words for most messages. If it needs to be longer, consider whether a call or document would serve better.
Social media
- Twitter / X: 71–100 characters gets the highest engagement (well under the 280 limit).
- LinkedIn: 1,900–2,000 characters for posts. Articles: 1,500–2,000 words.
- Instagram caption: 138–150 characters for highest engagement. Up to 2,200 is allowed.
- Facebook: 40–80 characters for posts. Surprisingly, shorter performs significantly better.
Academic writing
- Essay (high school): 500–800 words (5 paragraphs)
- Essay (university undergrad): 1,500–3,000 words depending on the course
- Research paper: 4,000–8,000 words
- Master's thesis: 15,000–50,000 words
- PhD dissertation: 80,000–100,000 words
